eeew, recyled kitty litter I used to a make my mix one gallon ash, 1/2 gallon natural clay, add water until its like playdoh, and then add a couple handfulls of chopped straw. Worked well, one batch...

If I understand it correctly the straw gives you more strength. Because you are adding its fibrous nature to the mix it helps everything stick together such as adobe and waddle and daub. It doesn't...

Tim, adding straw to a clay mixture will help reduce cracking and stengthen the mix. but it also has the added benefit of insulation, "nothing insulates better than nothing" According to my neighbor....

Hi Tim. Sounds like you've received good advice here. I used ash mixed with water as a liner. Held up well. But be careful, that stuff is caustic. Wear rubber gloves if you use your hands to apply it....
